As a branch of applied ethics, environmental ethics focuses on ethical values in human-environment relationships. Reading nature-oriented stories through environmental ethics can help understanding cultural roots of humans’ unacceptable behavior toward the environment. The themes of selected short stories, The Vagabond Dog by Sadeq Hedayat and The Baboon Whose Looti Was Dead by Sadeq Chubak, with their similar moral concerns make them well suited for such approach. Although many human-centered approaches have been applied, an environmental ethics criticism may be more appropriated since it is more in line with the authors’ specific worldview as well as the overall theme of the stories. The present paper attempts to study different types of human-domestic animal relations which are based on material and emotional needs. Then, we compare environmental ethics concerns of the stories and present authors’ reasons for the necessity of observing environmental ethics which includes logical and emotional reasons as they are stated implicitly and explicitly in the texts. Our study points to much of authors’ emphasis is laid on emotional justifications .Also it shows the similarities between authors’ ethical views and some of the traditional teachings as well as such modern ethical theories as Kant’s and Albert Schweitzer’s. The descriptions and other elements of the stories display a kind of fight against Speciesism
